the growth
The company added its second store in Kaleen Plaza, with a trading floor area of 1850sqm in 2000, and then a third store in Wanniassa Shopping Centre in 2004. Wanniassa was upgraded in line with the other stores in 2006 and commands a trading area today of over 1900sqm, providing customers with the complete offer including its own butchery department.
Supabarn’s expansion plans then took the company to Sydney with success in its Five Dock and Gymea stores. There are also plans to develop two more stores in Sydney in 2009. “It’s important for us to grow,” says Theo Koundouris, Managing Director. “Having new stores is great for all of our stakeholders. It’s exciting for us and our staff and it’s exciting for our suppliers too. They can see that we are a business moving forward and they see the potential to grow together in regards to volume.”
The Five Dock store was part of a major redevelopment completed in 2002 which now includes two floors of commercial space and five floors of residential apartments. The development is now the new centre of the local shopping precinct and has transformed the Five Dock skyline with its stylish design and modern looks.
Supabarn Express Gymea was an existing local convenience store trading in 575sqm with a limited range and needing a facelift. In the second half of 2008 the store was given that facelift as a major refurbishment program was undertaken. New refrigeration and shelving gave the store its much needed boost and a focus on the fresh side of the business.
